Beim Schwei\u00dfen werden die Kanten des Werkst\u00fccks verschmolzen, so dass die Verbindung m\u00f6glicherweise mit Zusatzwerkstoff hergestellt wird. Die Elektrode, das Schwei\u00dfbad, der Lichtbogen, der Schwei\u00dfzusatz und die angrenzenden Bereiche des Werkst\u00fccks werden durch einen aus dem Brenner str\u00f6menden Inertgasstrom (oder -gemisch) vor atmosph\u00e4rischer Verunreinigung gesch\u00fctzt. In Anbetracht der besonderen Stabilit\u00e4t des Lichtbogens, der geringen Gr\u00f6\u00dfe der W\u00e4rmequelle und der M\u00f6glichkeit, das Verfahren ohne Zusatzwerkstoff zu verwenden, wird das WIG-Verfahren h\u00e4ufig f\u00fcr die Herstellung hochwertiger Verbindungen an Werkstoffen verwendet, die empfindlich auf die durch das Schwei\u00dfen verursachte Erw\u00e4rmung reagieren (Cr-Mo-St\u00e4hle f\u00fcr Hochtemperaturanwendungen, rostfreie St\u00e4hle, Nichteisenlegierungen), insbesondere f\u00fcr die erste Lage.
